Music Director

A native of Detroit, Michigan, Peter Makar Jr. IV graduated from Livonia Bentley High School in 1968 and continued his education by attaining a degree in Music Education from Eastern Michigan University and a Masters of Administration from Central Michigan University.

Mr. Makar retired after 36 years in public education with several school districts, including the Pinconning Area and Akron Fairgrove Public Schools. During his tenure as music director, both districts experienced a renaissance of their respective music programs. Student involvement dramatically increased, along with successful participation in district and state music festivals. Bands under the direction of Mr. Makar have participated in countless local events, including the Bavarian Festival Parade and as a demonstration band for MSBOA Adjudicator training clinics. He has also held the trombone/tuba applied music adjunct faculty position at Saginaw Valley State University. After joining the faculty of the Bridgeport Spaulding Community Schools, Mr. Makar stepped off the podium and finished his public service career teaching computer applications and technology classes.

Outside of education, he has had an active and fulfilling career as a professional musician. Notable is his 32 seasons as bass trombonist with the Saginaw Bay Symphony, including eight seasons as production manager of the orchestra. Mr. Makar has also held full-time positions with the Jackson, Allen Park and Scandinavian symphony orchestras, as well as playing with orchestras in Flint, Traverse City, Lansing, Dearborn and Midland. He has also held the position of stage manager for several operas and ballets, worked the recording studio scene in the Detroit area and been a pit musician for countless musicals in the greater Detroit and Mid-Michigan areas. Special ensembles that he has performed with have played with many celebrities such as Bob Hope, Mel Torme, Tony Bennett, Michael Feinstein, Peter Nero and others.

In the band arena, he has had the privilege to play cornet in the Detroit Concert Band under the direction of Dr. Leonard Smith. Other band experience includes the Bay Concert Band, Saginaw Eddy Band, Midland Concert Band, Ann Arbor Civic Band and several others throughout Michigan. Mr. Makar is also an active adjudicator for MSBOA festivals and has judged bands in the Detroit Thanksgiving Day Parade while serving as a clinician and consultant for the Detroit Public Schools.
